Did you know Edison has an Innovation lab where student can work on Aquaponics, Genetics, Raising endangered species, Recycling or Re-purposing initiatives and even Robotics? Edison provides this hands on lab for our students to explore and experiment, and many science classes are utilizing this lab for their experiments and labs.
Edison High School’s Innovation Lab is in its 2nd year and expanding into our recently acquired outdoor area to expand current projects involving aquaponics, aquaculture, and fish breeding systems. Funds will also be used for students to collaborate and develop a vermicomposting program (using worms to create compost), a marine invertebrate tank system, a shark tank system, and incorporating wind and solar power to get our students involved in incorporating renewable energy sources. These systems will be designed, built, and maintained by students using STEAM practices (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics)..
Additionally our current indoor lab needs to be updated and upgraded using the most current technology and safety equipment.
We need funds for building materials such as lumber, hardware, gravel, pond-liners, pumps, power tools, PVC pipes, large-capacity water tanks (275 gal. which we buy used), and water-treatment media for both our salt and freshwater systems. ( Please contact Mr Gardiner or Mr Grace if you can help donate in any of these areas)
Your donations will also be used to purchase day-to- day products to keep the systems running such as fish food, bio-filters, seeds, and gardening tools and other expansion materials.
In our Robotics section, we hope to create a moisture-sensing auto-watering system using the EV3 Robotics System by Lego. Other projects include the design of an auto-feeder for some of our fish systems using Arduino, which is a prototyping board.
Edison High will have its first robot in the First Robotics Championship (FRC) competition. We are also going to compete in the Sea Perch competition with the creation of our underwater robot.
Your donations will help students grow as they develop the skills necessary for college and careers in the future through the hands-on experience they receive in the lab. Students will take with them a vast knowledge of new technologies and a greater understanding of how science improves our school, our community, and our world.
Thank you very much for your support!
